Introductory workshop

Description
A complimentary introductory workshop is held before each beginners course.
It's important to understand that incorporating yoga into our daily life has a very positive impact on our quality of life, however it also requires great effort, will power and discipline.

The purpose of the introductory workshop is to educated the students on what lies ahead. This provides those students who are uncertain about the beginners course an opportunity to gain insight into what the course compromises of and to make an informed decision on what is best suited to them.

During this time teachers will give students a very brief explanation and introduction to our Gurus (Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnu-devananda) and what their teachings are in relevance to the course. A brief explanation will also be given on the four paths of Yoga have a closer look on the eight limbs of Raja Yoga. We also introduce Swami Vishnu-devananda's five principles for incorporating yoga into daily life which were specially developed to suit people who follow a western lifestyle.

Following this brief insight into the yogic teachings and philosophy, the beginners course will be discussed. Additional information about the structure, rules and demands of this course will be addressed,as well as preparing for each class and what to do after each lesson for maximum benefit will also be given.

The next segment of the introductory workshop is of a practical nature. Here we will cover sitting postures, full yogic breathing and give a detailed explanation on the principles of stretching and proper relaxation. Each posture or technique will be demonstrated. The benefits and possible precautions will be explained as well as the correct method of getting in and out of posture. Students will be supervised and corrected (if required) while they carry out each posture or technique.

First part – theory
  • Talk about Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnu-devananda teachings and practices
  • Four paths of Yoga (Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Raja Yoga)
  • Eight limbs of Raja Yoga (Yama, Niyama, Asanas, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi)
  • Five points of Yoga (proper Exercise, Relaxation, Breathing, Diet and positive thinking and meditation)
  • Beginners course structure
Second part - practice (with demonstration, explanation and practice including individual corrections)
  • Discussing student's injuries or other physical limitations
  • Sitting postures
  • Full yogic breathing
  • Final relaxation

  • Workshop is free of charge
  • Duration is 1 – 2 hours, depending on amount of people
  • Introduction workshop is only held prior to beginners course
  • No equipment is required although loose comfortable clothing is recommended
